8.17

洪州觀音啟禪師。僧問。如何是祖師西來意。師曰。松長柏短。曰意旨如何。師曰。葉落歸根。

Chan Master Qǐ of Guānyīn in Hóngzhōu. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?"
The Master said, "Pines are tall; cypresses are short."
[The monk] asked, "What is the intended meaning?"
The Master said, "When leaves fall, they return to the root."
