Chan Master Yuánshàn of Tiānzhāng in Yuèzhōu. A monk asked, "Large, with nothing outside it; small, with nothing inside it. Since there is neither inside nor outside, what thing is it ultimately?"
The Master said, "Opening the mouth, one sees the gallbladder."
[The monk] said, "The student does not understand."
The Master said, "Suffering within suffering."
[The monk] said, "Exhausting one's strength for the assembly, calamity comes from one's own gate."
The Master struck him and said, "Told to cease, you refuse to cease; you must wait until rain drench your head."
[A monk] asked, "What is the primary phrase?"
The Master said, "Ask the final one in the future."
[The monk] said, "Why is it so?"
The Master said, "Walking ahead, one does not arrive."
[The monk] said, "Entering the water, one sees the tall person."
The Master said, "The First Emperor of Qin beats the clay jar."
Ascending the hall, [the Master recited]:
"You ask of the meaning of the coming from the West—
Master Mǎ stomped Shuǐlǎo.
If you recognize a single hair-tip,
when have you ever known its rising and falling?
Just as the kalpa-fire blazes through,
ignorant men seek dry grass.
How could one know that the clear-eyed person
endures long sorrow and deep sighs for you?"
