8.19

真州長蘆體明圓鑑禪師上堂。顧視左邊曰。師子之狀豈免頻申。顧右邊曰。象王之儀寧忘回顧。取此逃彼上士奚堪。識變知幾野狐窠窟。到這裏須知有凡聖不歷處古今不到處。且道是甚麼人行履。良久曰。丈夫自有衝天志。莫向如來行處來。

Chan Master Tǐmíng Yuánjiàn of Chánglú in Zhēnzhōu ascended the hall. Looking to the left, he said, "Can the lion's appearance avoid stretching?" Looking to the right, he said, "How could the deportment of the elephant king forget to glance back? Choosing this and fleeing that—how could a superior person endure it? Recognizing changes and discerning subtleties is the den of a wild fox. Arriving here, one must know that there is a place traversed by neither ordinary beings nor sages, a place unreached by past or present. And tell me, what kind of person walks there?" After a pause, he said, "A great man naturally possesses the will to pierce heaven; do not follow where the Tathāgata walks."
