8.21

平江府澄照慧慈禪師。僧問。了然無所得。為甚麼天高地闊。師曰。窄。上堂。若論此事眨上眉毛早是蹉過。那堪進步向前。更要山僧說破。而今說破了也。還會麼。昨日雨今日晴。

Chan Master Huìcí of Chéngzhào in Píngjiāng Prefecture. A monk asked, "Clearly with nothing to attain, why are heaven high and earth broad?"
The Master said, "Narrow."
Ascending the hall, [the Master said], "If discussing this matter, twitching an eyebrow is already to miss it. How can you bear stepping forward, wanting the mountain monk to explain it thoroughly besides? Now I have explained it thoroughly. Do you understand yet? Yesterday it rained; today it is clear."
