Chan Master Fǎcún of Bàoběn in Ānjí Prefecture was a son of the Lù family of Qiántáng. A monk asked, "Flavorless talk blocks people's mouths. What is the phrase that blocks people's mouths?"
The Master struck him immediately.
The monk said, "If so, then when this phrase circulates, devas and humans will prick up their ears."
The Master said, "I only fear it is not jade; if it were jade, it would be extraordinary indeed."
[The monk] said, "It is solely for the sake of circulation."
The Master said, "Speak wildly as you like."
When receiving an invitation at Tiānyī, he ascended the hall and said, "Shèngshòu in Wújiāng invites me to become abbot. Without leisure to advance or retreat, I simply follow the conditions of my lot. This is all due to the Abbot Upādhyāya holding me by the ear to train and educate me, encouraging and praising me from beginning to end. If based on today, when the true command is to be carried out, it would be fitting to beat me to death with a single stick—how could he further permit me to stand before his seat? Even though it is so, only in raising a child does one realize a father's kindness."
