8.32

明州啟霞惠安禪師。僧問。諸佛出世蓋為群生。和尚出世當為何人。師曰。不為闍梨。曰恁麼則潭深波浪靜學廣語聲低。師曰。棒上不成龍。

Chan Master Huì'ān of Qǐxiá in Míngzhōu. A monk asked, "All buddhas appear in the world for the sake of living beings. For whose sake does the upādhyāya appear in the world?"
The Master said, "Not for the ācārya's sake."
[The monk] said, "If so, then when the pool is deep, the waves are still; when learning is broad, the voice is quiet."
The Master said, "Atop the stick, one does not become a dragon."
