Chan Master Lingkan of Yunmen in Yuezhou. A monk asked, "How should one apply the mind throughout the twelve periods of the day?" The Master said, "Burning incense in the Buddha hall." [The monk] said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "Joining palms at the main triple gate." Ascending the hall, [the Master said,] "When worldly defilements are not yet shattered, encountering objects brings a thousand differences. When the mirror of the mind is perfectly clear, not the slightest thing is established. The numinous light, bright and pure, is solely revealed and manifest before you. Past and present are both forgotten; the paths of sage and ordinary person are cut off. Only upon arriving here can one furl and unfurl at ease, apply its function without deficiency, appearing and disappearing, coming and going throughout the human world and the heavens. Great assembly! Although this is so, if you were suddenly seized by someone who asked, 'Tell me, where will you place your staff? How will you respond?' is there anyone who can speak? Come forth and say something!" The assembly made no reply. Thereupon he slapped the Chan bed and descended from the seat.
