8.38

無為軍佛足處祥禪師。僧問。如何是般若體。師曰。瑠璃殿裏隱寒燈。曰如何是般若用。師曰。活卓卓地。問一色無變異喚作露地白牛。還端的也無。師曰。頭角生也。曰頭角未生時如何。師曰。不要犯人苗稼。

Chan Master Chuxiang of Fozu in Wuwei Commandery. A monk asked, "What is the substance of prajñā?" The Master said, "A cold lamp concealed in a lapis lazuli hall." [The monk] said, "What is the function of prajñā?" The Master said, "Vividly and briskly active." [A monk] asked, "A single color without alteration is called the white ox on the open ground. Is it truly so or not?" The Master said, "Its horns have grown." [The monk] said, "What about before its horns grew?" The Master said, "Do not violate other people's sprouts and grain."
