8.37

瑞州五峯淨覺院用機禪師。僧問。如何是道。師曰。十字街頭踏不著。曰便恁麼去時如何。師曰。且緩緩上堂。清平過水投子賣油。一年三百六十日。不須頻向數中求。以拂擊禪床下座。

Chan Master Yongji of the Jingjue Cloister on Mount Wufeng in Ruizhou. A monk asked, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "At the crossroads, you cannot tread upon it." [The monk] said, "What happens when one goes on just like that?" The Master said, "Take it slowly!" Ascending the hall, [the Master said,] "Qingping wading through the water; Touzi selling oil. Three hundred and sixty days in a year—no need to constantly seek among the numbers." Striking the Chan bed with his whisk, he descended from the seat.
