Chan Master Zhijue of Yongtai in Jinyun County, Chuzhou. A monk asked, "Since leaving Shaolin there has been no news; today please diligently bring it forth." The Master said, "The moonlight naturally shines upon the three thousand realms; clouds and water vainly follow the hundred-thousand-league journey." [The monk] said, "For what purpose did he gaze at the wall for nine years?" The Master said, "Carrying a single shoe, he returned west on his own." He then said, "The autumn wind rustles, the jade dew is chillingly clear. Chrysanthemums unfurl their fragrant buds, and rice hangs down its fine ears. The times are clear, the Way is peaceful, and the rustic elders sing. Everywhere people climb high, and everyone is joyful. Venerable Chan monks! Take the patch-robed monks in the forest—do they not know the season? If they sit quietly in silence, forgetting the form and remaining blind to the seasonal scenery, then in the depths of the emerald peaks they do not follow the four seasons. A single stick of sandalwood incense: no kindness is left unrequited." Slapping the Chan bed, he descended from the seat.
