8.43

杭州龍華文喜禪師初住陸蓮菴。僧問。如何是陸蓮境。師曰。一徑階前草數株霜後松。云如何是境中人。師曰。擘開凡聖路踏破畫門來。云向上宗乘事若何。師曰。一條楖栗杖萬里作風威。乃曰。諸仁者且道。答伊境不答伊境。若道答伊境。山僧眼在什麼處。若道不答伊境。又道一徑階前草數株霜後松。還相委悉麼。良久曰。時時明祖意日日起清風。珍重。

Chan Master Wenxi of Longhua in Hangzhou first resided at the Lulian Hermitage. A monk asked, "What is the realm of Lulian?" The Master said, "A single path of grass before the steps; several pine trees after the frost." [The monk] said, "Who is the person within the realm?" The Master said, "Tearing open the path of ordinary and holy, treading through the painted gate to arrive." [The monk] said, "What is the matter of the ultimate lineage vehicle?" The Master said, "A single staff of prickly ash creates wind and awe for ten thousand leagues." He then said, "Kind sirs, tell me: Did I answer his realm, or did I not answer his realm? If you say I answered his realm, where were this mountain monk's eyes? If you say I did not answer his realm, I also said, 'A single path of grass before the steps; several pine trees after the frost.' Do you fully understand?" After a long pause, he said, "Time and again illuminate the Patriarch's meaning; day by day a clear breeze arises. Take care!"
