Chan Master Xiyin of Mount Xingyang in Yingzhou. A monk asked, "What is the phrase for letting go of one's grip on the edge of the cliff?" The master said, "The bright moon shines upon the secluded valley." [The monk] said, "What is the phrase for reviving after having perished?" The master said, "White clouds arise in the great void." [The monk] said, "If so, then the woodcutter emerges from the wooded hills, everywhere singing of the colors of spring." The master said, "This is someone who is able to speak." Ascending the hall, [the master said], "To see completely is not to see; seeing completely, it is not yet ended. Travelers upon the road; birds roosting in the woods. Within the moon, the pagoda stands twelve stories high; beyond the heavens, the starry constellations span five hundred tips. Do you wish to understand? Holding in hand the nocturnal luminous talisman, how many know that dawn has broken? Attend!"
