Chan Master Xiaoyu of Longhua Temple on Mount Huangmei in Qizhou went to Upādhyāya Wuzu Jie. Wuzu asked, "Without falling into lips and tongue, say a phrase: how is it?" The Master said, "Old and decrepit, yet not even looking after your own topic of discussion!" Wuzu immediately gave a shout. The Master also gave a shout. Wuzu picked up his staff; the Master clapped his hands and walked out. Wuzu called out, "Ācārya, stay a moment; there is more to say!" Slinging his sitting cloth over his shoulder, the Master never even looked back. Ascending the hall, [the Master said,] "Kāśyapa Mātanga's entering the Han had already involved complicated verbiage; Bodhidharma's coming from the West did not keep to his own station. That this mountain monk speaks like this today is likewise giving rise to ignorance over other people's idle affairs."
