Chan Master Haotai of Tiansheng in Anji Prefecture was a man from Hedong. He arrived at Langye. Langye asked, "Ambushes and skirmishes do not make an adept. On a single horse with a single spear, please step forth and meet me." The Master pointed at Langye and said, "When the commander is not fierce, he brings trouble to the three armies." Langye struck the Master once with his sitting cloth; the Master also struck Langye once with his sitting cloth. Langye grabbed hold of it and said, "Just now, this one blow with the sitting cloth was this mountain monk putting an order into effect. Where does the elder monk's blow with the sitting cloth land?" The Master said, "I prostrate and offer the sacrifice." Langye pushed him away and said, "Rising at the fifth watch early at dawn, there are still travelers in the night." The Master said, "Drawing the bow after the thief has passed." Langye said, "Sit for a while and drink tea." After becoming abbot, a monk asked, "What is Buddha?" The Master said, "The black-lacquered Holy Monk." The monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "Looking at the wall, it resembles the color of earth."
