Chan Master Xiuyi of Mount Zhangxi in Mingzhou was a native of Hangzhou. He traveled with Venerable Yuan of Fushan. Once he established a hermitage at Buddha Hand Crag on Mount Lu. Later he went to the heart of the Siming Mountains and lived alone for more than ten years, keeping company with tigers and leopards. He once said: "On the sheep-gut and bird paths no one arrives; a solitary person amidst the desolate clouds." Afterward, monastics and laypeople heard of his reputation and arrived, so it turned into a Chan forest. A monk asked, "What is the seamless stūpa?" The Master said, "Four edges touch the ground." The monk asked, "What is the person inside the stūpa?" The Master said, "Resting on a high pillow without care." A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "Crossing the sea by ship, returning home barefoot."
