裴休。字公美。事唐。會昌中以兵部侍郎御史大夫同平章事。號為名相。撰圭峯密師傳法碑曰。釋迦如來最後以法眼付大迦葉。令祖祖相傳別行於世。非私於迦葉而外人天聲聞菩薩也。自大迦葉至於達磨。凡二十八世。達磨傳可。可傳璨。璨傳信。信傳忍。忍傳能為六祖。

Pei Xiu, styled Gongmei, served the Tang dynasty. During the Huichang era, as Vice Minister of War and Censor-in-Chief with the rank of Tong Pingzhangshi, he was celebrated as a famous chancellor. In composing the Dharma Transmission Stele for Master Mi of Guifeng, he wrote: 'Śākyamuni Tathāgata finally entrusted the Dharma-eye to Mahākāśyapa, ordering it to be transmitted from patriarch to patriarch to circulate separately in the world; it was not that he favored Kāśyapa and excluded humans, devas, śrāvakas, and bodhisattvas. From Mahākāśyapa down to Bodhidharma, there were twenty-eight generations in total. Bodhidharma transmitted it to Ke; Ke transmitted it to Can; Can transmitted it to Xin; Xin transmitted it to Ren; Ren transmitted it to Neng as the Sixth Patriarch.'
