裴休字公美。自唐會昌中以兵部侍郎御史大夫同平章事。號為名相。撰圭峯密師傳法碑曰。釋迦如來最後以法眼付大迦葉。令祖祖相傳。別行於世。非私於迦葉而外人天聲聞菩薩也。自大迦葉至於達磨。凡二十八世。達磨傳可。可傳璨。璨傳信。信傳忍。忍傳能為六祖。

Pei Xiu had the courtesy name Gongmei. Beginning in the Huichang era of the Tang, as Vice Minister of the Ministry of War, Censor-in-Chief, and Joint Manager of Affairs with the Secretariat-Chancellery, he was known as a famous minister of state. In composing the stele inscription for the transmission of the Dharma of Master [Zong]mi of Guifeng, he wrote: "Śākyamuni Tathāgata at the very end transmitted the Dharma eye to Mahākāśyapa, causing it to be transmitted from patriarch to patriarch and to circulate separately in the world—not out of partiality toward Kāśyapa while excluding humans, devas, śrāvakas, and bodhisattvas. From Mahākāśyapa down to Bodhidharma, there were twenty-eight generations in all. Bodhidharma transmitted it to [Hui]ke; Ke transmitted it to [Seng]can; Can transmitted it to [Dao]xin; Xin transmitted it to [Hong]ren; Ren transmitted it to [Hui]neng, who was the sixth patriarch."
