Appraisal: Other books record a great deal about the deeds of Upagupta; why is this account so brief? The answer is: this is merely concerned with the essential beginnings and ends of the entrustment and transmission. After the Tathāgata, in terms of transforming and guiding people successfully, only the Venerable Upagupta had the most. Yet his deeds are so numerous that I fear even all bamboo slips and silk scrolls could not hold them, and who could write them all down? As for the tallies in the chamber, they merely recorded those who attained the noble fruit; they did not necessarily exhaust all those he transformed.
