After Punyamitra received the transmission of the Dharma, he further said to Vāśasita, "The Venerable One keeps the patriarchal master's saṃghāṭī robe hidden in the royal palace and has not deigned to confer it on me. Why is that?" Vāśasita said, "When I received the robe in the past, it was because our late master met with calamity; the Dharma was transmitted in secret, and [the robe] served as a proof of trust for the present time. You have just succeeded me, and all Five Indias know it. What use is the robe? Only be diligent in transforming and guiding others. After you, those who will cross over people will be measureless." Punyamitra silently accepted the command. Soon afterwards, the Venerable One leaped into the void and displayed the eighteen transformations, emitting a great radiance that illuminated heaven and earth. Then, in mid-air, he manifested fire and incinerated himself. Although relics rained down, they did not fall to the ground. The assembly caught them with the folds of their robes. Soon they erected a stūpa and enshrined them together. That time corresponded to the era of Emperor Ming of the Eastern Jin.
