In the second generation from Dajian, there was Chan Master Shenhui of Heze in Luoyang. He first visited Dajian as a novice (śrāmaṇera). Prompted by their question-and-answer exchange, he gave rise to great wisdom. After his ordination, he encountered Dajian's entering into extinction. The teachings of Shenxiu in the north were gradually flourishing, so Shenhui proceeded to the capital. In the fourth year of the Tianbao era, he single-handedly determined the patriarchal way into Northern and Southern lineages, authoring a book entitled Xianzong lun (Treatise Revealing the Lineage).
