1.23

At that time there was a brahman leading five hundred disciples who also resided in these mountains. Seeing Kāśyapa and his wife, he gave rise to slander, saying, "The rule for leaving home is that each should remain chaste; how can there be reason in a husband and wife following each other?" Kāśyapa then parted from his wife, used five hundred liang of gold to purchase patch-robes, and went to dwell in a separate forest. His wife then took refuge with the brahman, seeking to become his disciple. The brahman's five hundred disciples saw that this woman was graceful and fair in appearance, and engaged in illicit sex every day. The woman lacked autonomy and could not endure it, so she reported it to their master. The master then restrained his disciples with rules, ordering them to moderate their desires.
