Later, Kāśyapa encountered the Buddha's appearance in the world. Hearing the Dharma and receiving transformation, he attained arhatship. Hearing that his former wife was with the brahmacārins, he brought her to the Buddha. The Buddha preached the Dharma for her and she attained arhatship; her hair fell out on its own, the Dharma robes appeared on her body, and she became a bhikṣuṇī, traveling about to teach and transform. It happened that King Prasenajit held a great assembly, and the bhikṣuṇīs were able to enter the royal palace, where they taught the court ladies and led them all to observe the one-day upoṣadha fast. When the king returned to the palace in the evening and summoned the ladies, they all said they were observing the fast and none would come. The king was enraged and asked his attendants, "Who taught the ladies to fast?" An attendant answered, "A certain bhikṣuṇī!" The king summoned her and ordered that for ninety days she take the place of the ladies in receiving [the king's] lustful desires. All of this was the retribution pursued by her past causes, conditions, and vows; therefore, even though she had attained arhatship, she could not escape it.
