The premier senior monk of Dae-heungnyun-sa in the kingdom of Silla was named Doan. Having entered monastic life from childhood, he lived continuously in this monastery. He also had a slight understanding of the sūtras and treatises, and was looked up to by young and old alike. However, he was excessively particular about his food and drink: if a single dish did not suit his taste, caning and beating would follow in turns; from morning till evening he was restless and agitated, scarcely enjoying a moment of peace. Although the assembly was troubled by him, no one could restrain him. Later, because he contracted an illness, his behavior grew even more severe than before: he cursed, reviled, beat others in anger, and hurled vessels, so that relatives and neighbors, inside and out, did not dare look upon him. After several days, he transformed into a serpent more than a hundred feet long. Roaring loudly, it came out of the room and went straight into the wild woods. When monastics and laity saw and heard of this, there were none whose hearts were not saddened and warned.
