Dharma Master Xiurong of Jinhua Monastery in Shu Commandery had many pines and cypresses in his courtyard. Yellow caterpillars, two to three inches long, bred there without end. Xiurong had people sweep them up and bury them or discard them in the firewood stacks. The monk Renxiu took the firewood to cook provisions and dried it in the scorching sun; countless caterpillars died. After more than a month, Xiurong died suddenly. A monk of Jinhua Monastery entered the underworld and saw Xiurong wearing an iron cangue, sitting in the open under the blazing sun, bitten and devoured by tens of millions of insects. When the monk revived, he recounted everything to Renxiu. Renxiu was terrified; he soon suffered from back sores and died within a few days.
