From all four quarters, people gathered at Ciyun Monastery on Mount Yunding, offering abundant provisions. The vihārasvāmin, the monk Shenyan, was greedy and mean by nature. He embezzled the donations of the monastery, drank wine, ate meat, kept a wife and children, and left nothing undone. Any monks who were aloof and pure were inevitably abused by him. One day he fell gravely ill and said: “In the air a stone mortar hangs by a rope, and a rat is gnawing at it. The rope snapped and struck me right in the heart!” He cried out loudly and stopped breathing, but revived after a long while. This happened several dozen times before he finally died. Over a year later, a cow in a village below the monastery gave birth to a calf, beneath whose belly the two characters “Shenyan” were clearly visible. (Records of Admonition and Warning)
