Recently, a monk residing beyond worldly affairs in the mountains fell gravely ill. That evening, outside, food was being distributed [to hungry ghosts]. He said to his caregiver: “A ghost took me by the arm to go out and eat. I declined and did not go. Shortly after, it returned and said: ‘The Dharma Master is insincere; we returned empty-handed, and we will surely take revenge on him!’ Thereupon it pulled my arm and made me go along. A crowd holding grapnels and lassoes said: ‘We want to drag this Dharma Master down to the ground!’ I screamed in terror for help, and they dispersed at once.” Several days later, the monk died. (Furthermore,) one monk was insincere, so he was carried by ghosts to a river where they tried to drown him. Another monk failed to lock his robe chest and kept his mind on the key; the ghosts saw only pieces of iron on the rice, and so could not eat. Another monk had laid out a felt robe to dry and had not collected it; when rain fell, his mind was on this robe, and the ghosts saw only animal fur on the rice, and so could not eat. Each received an apparent retribution. Also, someone entered the underworld and saw several hundred monks in a dark room, their bodies emaciated and complexions haggard, appearing in unbearable sorrow and suffering. When asked, they were all masters who had performed food distributions. (Casual Jottings by the Bamboo Window)
