At Liji Monastery in Wuzhen, there were two monks, master and disciple. Both were known for being cautious and honest. Those entrusting them with sūtra recitations and penitential rituals grew daily, through which they became wealthy, yet they were stingy: they did not enjoy the wealth themselves, nor did they give it in alms. Later, the elder monk fell ill; his kinsmen welcomed him home to care for him, and soon he passed away. His lifelong savings were entirely taken by his clan. Ten years later, he appeared in a dream to a relative, saying: “Because those penitential rituals and sūtra recitations were left unfinished, the underworld tribunal investigates with extreme severity; the suffering is beyond words.”
