The śramaṇa Buddhapāli of the kingdom of Kapiśa in North India (in Tang speech: Juehu), forgetting his body and dedicating his life, heard that Mañjuśrī was on Qingliang Shan. Traveling far across the shifting sands, he came in person to pay homage, hoping to behold the holy countenance. He saw an old man emerge from within the mountains, who spoke to Pāli, saying, "Master, coming from that kingdom, did you bring the Sarvadurgatipariśodhana-uṣṇīṣavijayā-dhāraṇī or not? The sentient beings of this land commit many sins, and those who have renounced household life also commit many transgressions. The divine dhāraṇī of the Buddha's uṣṇīṣa is the secret method for eliminating sins. If you did not bring the scripture, what benefit is there in coming in vain? Even if you saw Mañjuśrī, how could you recognize him? You should return to the Western Lands, fetch that scripture, and spread it in this land." Having heard these words, Pāli leaped for joy beyond measure. In the time it took to raise his head, the old man suddenly disappeared. Pāli was astonished. He then returned to his native land, obtained the scripture and brought it back, entering into Wutai Shan, from which he has not emerged to this day.
