The country of Bolor, four thousand li in circumference, situated in the midst of the Great Snowy Mountains. Long from east to west, it has several hundred monasteries and several thousand monks; their masters' precepts and conduct are mostly lax. This country is not governed by India. It has much ice and snow, and its earth produces gold the colour of fire. To the north it faces the great ridge of Mount Varāhaśaila. Returning from the south of the city of Udabhāṇḍa in the country of Gandhāra, one crosses the Indus River, which is about four li wide, flowing clear as a mirror to the southwest; poisonous dragons and evil beasts dwell in caves within it, and boats carrying relics or jewelled flowers mostly sink. Crossing the river, one reaches the country of Takṣaśilā (in Northern India), over two thousand li in circumference, with a capital city over ten li in circumference. Monasteries are numerous and monks are few, all studying the Mahāyāna.
