Beside it is the Soma Stūpa, marking the event where the Buddha transformed into a soma snake, eating which cured diseases. At the stūpa on the northern cliff of the valley, many who seek relief from illness are cured. Also beside it is a spring where the Buddha, in the past as a peacock king, pecked the rocks with his beak to bring forth water to relieve illnesses. Seventy li southwest of the city, east of the great river, a stūpa sixty feet high was built by King Uttarasena. The Buddha had instructed that a share of the relics be given to the king to erect a stūpa on the riverbank. When the king returned carrying it on a white elephant, the elephant turned into stone. Over fifty li west of the city, crossing the great river, there is the Rohitaka Stūpa, over fifty feet high; this is where the Buddha, in the past as King Maitrībala, pierced his body to draw blood to feed five yakṣas. Thirty li northeast of the city is the Adbhuta stone stūpa, forty feet high; when the Buddha expounded the Dharma for humans and devas, the stūpa sprang up from the earth and has remained there ever since. Crossing the great river forty li to the west, a monastery vihāra houses an image of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, whose miraculous power shines far and wide. One hundred and fifty li west of this, on a mountain ridge, there is a dragon pool over thirty li in circumference. Northeast of the royal city, crossing through mountains and valleys, one goes upstream along the Indus River along an extremely perilous path, riding suspended ropes, walking wooden planks, suspended iron chains and pegs, and treading rock ledges; after over a thousand li, one reaches the valley of Darel, the former capital of Udyāna. In a great monastery, there is a carved wooden image of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, dazzling golden and over a hundred feet high, fashioned by the Arhat Madhyāntika; using his supernatural powers, he took a craftsman up to Tuṣita Heaven three times to observe the facial features before completing its excellence. Ever since this image existed, the Dharma began to flow eastward. Travelling east, crossing ridges upstream along the Indus River, treading treacherous paths and suspended bridges for over five hundred li, one crosses the river; crossing east again over the Vakṣu River and ascending perilous heights, one arrives at:
