Not far southeast of the city is the Village of Water and Fire. About one li to the east is the Agni water, twenty paces in circuit; whether in drought or flood it remains full, non-flowing yet constantly boiling. If domestic fire is cast into it, flames rise over the entire pond, with smoke and flames several feet high; if water is splashed on the fire, the fire burns all the more fiercely. If pulverized earth is thrown into it, it also burns away completely; whatever is thrown in turns to ashes. When a cauldron is placed over the water, food cooked therein is instantly done. It is said that within this water there was formerly a gold chest. A king once led people to retrieve it; the chest had already emerged from the mud, but neither men nor elephants could haul it out. A nocturnal spirit told him, "This is the crown of Maitreya Buddha; intended for him to wear upon descending to be born, it cannot be obtained." It is protected by a fire dragon. More than ten li south of the city, a solitary mountain is extraordinarily graceful. Monasteries stand stacked upon it, appearing like clouds and mist. The pines, bamboos, fish, and dragons are tame and attach themselves to people, taking food from their hands; anyone who harms them brings ruin upon his family. In recent times, state envoys all travel back and forth through this kingdom. It now belongs to Tubo. Going one hundred and fifty li south from Vaiśālī and crossing the Ganges, one reaches the kingdom of Magadha, which is the commonly called Magadha-Rājagṛha.
