2.83

四謂。晉武世。燉煌沙門竺法護。西遊三十六國。大齎胡經沿路譯出。至長安青門外立寺。結眾千餘。教相廣流東夏者。法護深有殊功。故釋道安云。若親得此公。筆自綱領。必正斯至言也。

The fourth: In the time of Emperor Wu of the Jin, the śramaṇa Zhu Fahu of Dunhuang traveled west to thirty-six kingdoms, bringing back a great quantity of Hu scriptures and translating them along the way. Arriving outside the Qing Gate of Chang'an, he founded a monastery and gathered over a thousand followers. That the teaching flourished and spread throughout the Eastern Realm was due to Fahu's profoundly extraordinary merit. Therefore, Shi Dao'an said: 'If one could have met this gentleman in person, his brush would naturally grasp the essentials, and these supreme words would surely have been rectified.'
