The kingdom of Kaliṅga (Southern India) is over 5,000 li in circuit. The capital is over 20 li in circuit. They have little faith in the Buddha's Dharma. There are over ten monasteries with over five hundred monks, belonging to the Mahāyāna Sthaviranikāya. There are over a hundred deva temples and very many tīrthikas. South of the city is an Aśoka stupa over a hundred feet high, where the four buddhas sat. On a high ridge of a great mountain on the northern border is a stupa over a hundred feet high, the place where a pratyekabuddha entered nirvāṇa at the beginning of the kalpa when human life was immeasurable. In the deep forests of the country, stretching for several hundred li, fragrant elephants are produced, which are prized by neighbouring countries. Formerly, ṛṣis of five superknowledges dwelt on the cliffs; because people disturbed them, their superknowledges declined, whereupon they killed the people of this country with evil curses, and even now the population is small. Going over 1,800 li northwest through mountain forests, one reaches [the following kingdom].
