I rectify this by saying: This objection binds itself without needing ropes. The Buddhist teaching universally places benevolence and not killing, loyalty and trustworthiness without ostentation, and purity and uprightness without stealing at its head. Laozi said: 'Weapons are instruments of ill omen; drawing near to them brings calamity.' Rong relied on weapons and was cruel and violent, allying with bandits and rebels; this was his first violation of killing. He received a mission from someone and took what he did not report to his master; this was his second violation of deceit. He misappropriated official goods for his own profit; this was his third violation of theft. The Buddhist scriptures say: 'Do not use alcohol for charity,' yet Rong indulged in it; this was his fourth violation of alcohol. Having violated all the precepts, his actions led him into the jaws of death. It is like an official untying his seal, taking off his cap, and running amok along the road; a five-foot child could restrain him. That Ze Rong met an unnatural death merely serves to demonstrate that committing evil brings calamity.
