Daobiao and the others recently presented our case, hoping to awaken the imperial discernment; but receiving the enlightened edict once more, we have not obtained your compassionate pardon. Reading it prostrate with sorrow and anxiety, we feel as if our spirits have lost their anchor. Your Majesty's benevolence is vast, covering and bearing all things, allowing each to find joy in its nature. Heng and the others have practiced the Dharma's transformation since youth; what our foolish feelings take pleasure in is vowing to bring our humble lives to an end along with the Dharma robes. Yet your excessive grace has descended upon us, forgetting our deficiencies and urging us to broadly practice the bodhisattva's way of universal salvation. However, our will and strength are limited, and truly cannot endure it. It is not merely that in our remaining years we seek to avoid duty; it is simply that what our past hearts cherished, our private hearts must protect. We humbly hope you will examine and pardon our single-minded sincerity, not blame our one-sided obstinacy, and specially grant a gracious decree allowing us to fulfill our humble wish. Repeatedly receiving your enlightened edicts, we are seized with dread and awe. Unable to bear our utmost sincerity, we respectfully submit this memorial once again.
