5.20

難曰。神不待形。未可頓辯。就如子言。苟不待形則資形之與獨照其理常一。雖曰相資而本不相關。佛理所明。而必陶鑄此神以濟彼形何哉。

The guest objected: 'That the spirit does not depend on corporeal form cannot be resolved at once. Taking it as you say: if it does not depend on corporeal form, then relying on corporeal form and illuminating alone would be always identical in principle. Although they are said to mutually rely, originally they would be unrelated. What the Buddhist principle clarifies must mold this spirit to aid that corporeal form—why is that?'
