答曰。異哉言乎。人若有如木之質以為形。又有異木之知以為神。則可如來論也。今人之質質有知也。木之質質無知也。人之質非木質也。木之質非人質也。安在有如木之質。而復有異木之知。

Answer: Strange words indeed! If a human had a material substance like wood to serve as corporeal form, and had a sentience different from wood to serve as spirit, then it would be as your argument says. But now, human material substance is a material substance with sentience; wood's material substance is a material substance without sentience. Human material substance is not wood's material substance, and wood's material substance is not human material substance. How could there be a material substance like wood that also possesses a sentience different from wood?
