The five hindrances are: first, greed and lust; second, anger and resentment; third, ignorance; fourth, wrong views; and fifth, agitation and frivolity. To speak of them separately: pursuing desires is greed; indulgence and attachment is lust. What breaks out externally is anger; what is knotted internally is resentment. Being tied to fetters and attachments, clashing with principle and being inverted and confused, is ignorance. In the causes and conditions of birth and death, ignorance is the root; all attachments begin with ignorance. The cruel torments of hell mostly originate from resentment.
