10.24

詔曰。肉由害命。斷之且然。酒不損生。何為頓制。若使無損。計罪無過言非。飲漿食飯亦應得罪。而實不爾。酒何偏斷。

The edict said: "Meat comes from harming life, so cutting it off may indeed be so. Alcohol does not harm life; why enact an absolute prohibition? If it causes no harm, and by calculating the offense there is no fault in it, saying it is wrong means that drinking water or eating rice should also incur guilt. Yet in reality they do not. Why prohibit alcohol exclusively?"
