The external treatise says: Rites and righteousness are the wondrous instructions that perfect virtue; loyalty and filial piety are the roots of conduct that establish oneself. We have never seen a state survive when its ministers and commoners lost the rites, nor a family establish itself when its sons and grandsons were unfilial. Now Gautama formulated a teaching that strictly mandates clothes matching Hu attire, thereby becoming a 'teacher among humans'; and chanting barbarian words, thereby becoming 'honored in the world.' This has led worthless scoundrels to commit insubordination by relying on this: squatting casually before their fathers and elder brothers, they style themselves 'śramaṇas'; acting arrogantly before their lords and kings, they call themselves the 'Śākya clan.' Inhumane and unfilial conduct is already manifest in the family; lack of rites and reverence is again displayed in the state—(Refutation: The *Liji* states: 'When the son is capped, the father serves him wine in person, and the mother bows to him. Because his place is high, could he also be said to lack rites and filial piety?')—this causes every household to produce sons like owl-monsters, and everyone to rear children like jackals and wolves! Stroking one's chest to consult one's heart, this is truly lamentable! The Way of Heaven has no intimates; how could Hua and Yi be separated? It aids only virtue; how could it distinguish Hu from Han? How could wearing a headscarf and cultivating good alone lack superior merit, while shaving the head and practicing charity alone be able to invoke the fruit? How could benevolence and kindness have to wait for shaving the head, and maintaining truth have no need for mutilating one's bodily appearance? Yet the world cannot understand this. This is their third delusion.
