The Note states: The *Rites* says that when a son is capped, the father toasts him and the mother bows to him; this is because his position is elevated. How can it be called lacking rites and filial piety? If it were as you say, every household would produce owl- and jing-like children, and every person would rear wolf- and dhole-like sons. Pressing hand to chest and searching the heart, this is truly lamentable! The Way of Heaven has no favourites; how could Hu and Yi be separated? It assists only virtue; why distinguish between barbarian and Han? Can it be that wearing a headcloth and cultivating goodness lacks superior blessing, while a bald crown practicing giving alone can evoke the fruit? Does humaneness and benevolence reside in shaving the head? Does preserving the true require disfiguring one's appearance? The world cannot know this. This is their third delusion.
