The Master of Penetrating Insight said: "Even granting that the Dao exists, it cannot produce itself; it emerges from spontaneity (ziran). Since the Dao is rooted in spontaneity, the Dao relies on something else. Being dependent on an other, it is impermanent. Therefore Laozi said: 'Man models himself on Earth; Earth models itself on Heaven; Heaven models itself on the Dao; the Dao models itself on spontaneity.' In Wang Bi's words, Heaven, Earth, king, and Dao do not contradict one another, which is why it is called 'modeling.' 'Spontaneity' is a term for the ultimate, having no designation. 'Dao' is the name for wisdom and spiritual knowledge. Employing wisdom does not match having no wisdom; having form does not match having no form. 'Dao' has the sense of existence, and does not match the non-existence of spontaneity."
