The versatile scholar said: 'Even if there is a Dao, it cannot generate itself: it is born from spontaneity and emerges from spontaneity. If the Dao is rooted in spontaneity, then the Dao is dependent. Since it exists dependent on another, it is impermanent. Therefore Laozi said: "Man models himself on Earth; Earth models itself on Heaven; Heaven models itself on the Dao; the Dao models itself on spontaneity." Wang Bi said: "This means the Daos of Heaven and Earth do not contradict each other; hence they are said to 'model'. Spontaneity is a term for the unnameable and the ultimate. The Dao is a title for wisdom and spiritual knowledge. Employing wisdom is inferior to having no wisdom; having form is inferior to having no form. The Dao possesses meaning, which is inferior to the meaninglessness of spontaneity."'
