The Bodhisattva says: The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom states: 'Because it is counted by thousands upon thousands, it is called three thousand; doubling this and adding another thousand, it is called a great thousand. Kapilavastu lies in the very center of it.' The Loutan Jing states: 'East of the Onion River is named Cīnasthāna, because the sun first rises and shines upon the eastern corner, hence it receives this name.' When the Buddhas appear in the world, they are all in the central region, never born in border regions. If they were born in border regions, the earth would tilt on their account. According to the Fayuan Zhuan, the Biographies of Eminent Monks, the Yongchu Ji, and other texts: During the Song dynasty, He Chengtian and Dharma Master Zhiyan debated the border and the center. The Dharma Master said: 'In the land of Central India, at noon on the day of the summer solstice, an upright stick casts no shadow. On the shadow platform of the Han land, when that time arrives and a gnomon is erected, there is still a remaining shadow.' According to the computational texts, one inch in Heaven corresponds to one thousand li on Earth. How could he not realize this? The center and border are settled by investigating facts: the country of Central India is the center of the earth, separated from the oceans in all four directions by more than fifty thousand li. If we measure this land, bordering the ocean to the east, then Cīnasthāna is inherently located in the east, and Kapilavastu would never be considered the west. Its principle is verified!"
