The Outsiders' treatise says: As for being equally free from arising and cessation, their principles are identical; yet in guiding the world and leading the ordinary, they are not without difference. However, life is what creatures delight in, and death is what creatures loathe. Thus the Dao of life is difficult to attain and must await the cultivation of merit, whereas the method of cessation is easy to seek—why should it require toilsome study? Therefore we know that by ascending with the spirit and riding the sun's rays, one can preserve one's body for accumulated kalpas; when the breath is exhausted and the form perishes, the spirit naturally departs in a single moment. This is the second distinction in the teachings.
