The non-Buddhist treatise says: As for the equality of non-arising and non-cessation, the principle is uniform. Yet in guiding the world and leading ordinary beings, there cannot but be differences. Arising is what beings delight in; cessation is what beings abhor. Thus, the way of life is difficult to attain and must await cultivated merit; the method of cessation is easy to seek, so how could it require laborious learning? From this we know that by ascending with the spirit and harnessing the sunbeams, one can naturally preserve the body for accumulated kalpas; when the qi is exhausted and the form perishes, the spirit naturally passes away in an instant. This is the second difference in the gates of teaching.
