The stupa of Famen Temple is situated on a flat plain twenty li north of Qishan County, to the south of Mount Qi in Qizhou. Since antiquity, it has been opened once every thirty years; whenever it is opened, there is always a miraculous response. In the fifth year of the Xianqing reign era, an imperial decree commanded the monk Zhicong to go and make a request, upon which auspicious signs appeared, allowing it to be opened and uncovered. A brilliant light illuminated it, seen by both clergy and laity. It was then unearthed and presented to the palace. In the second year of the Longshuo reign era, it was returned to the ancient stupa. The śarīra was like the knuckle bone of an adult's finger, about two inches long, with a square cavity inside, white in color and brightly luminous, as depicted in a separate illustration.
