I venture to observe: Provisional existence through causes and conditions is the clinging root of sentient beings; phenomena fundamentally not being so is the wondrous principle of the ultimate person. Thus, the three realms and six destinies circle within karmic obstacles, confusing themselves, while the eight liberations and ten knowledges guide them back to the source, opening wide into emptiness. For this reason, the Great Master, the Capable and Benevolent One, spread the Way in accord with conditions, pitying how the burning house had already caught fire, and grieving that the currents of desire rushed onward forever. He entrusted himself to the palace of Pure Food, illuminating with a golden hue; dwelling amidst these three delusions, he revealed that the painted box was unreal, and stepping out through those four gates, he was alarmed that floating clouds easily vanish. Thereupon the Buddha-sun arose, and the Dharma-thunder roared; he set forth the gradual teachings and manifested expedient traces. The Three Jewels appeared in the world, and all knew the one way of return; he gathered in the common masses on a grand scale, saving those not yet ferried across. The moisture of the Dharma-cloud and Dharma-water equaled the world's boundlessness; the brilliance of the lamp of wisdom and torch of wisdom matched the limitlessness of empty space. The conditions of beings were hard to measure, and the causes for transformation were about to cease; the grove opened in the white day, and the tree was reflected in green boughs. How sorrowful that the six consciousnesses sink down in the eight sufferings! Without the Great Sage, who could sustain the bridge of wisdom? The Emperor embodies the sagacious virtue of Qian's primal power and harbors the pure sincerity of Heaven and Earth; illuminating with the spirit of a jade mirror, he grasps the fortune of great peace. Swallowing Yu and pregnant with Xia, enveloping Han and encaging Zhou, he rides the six breaths to father the common people, and fans the two poles to nourish all things. Weaving music and organizing rites, he rests military pursuits and cultivates civil arts; autumn brake-grass is not set out, abolishing the severe penal codes of the nine statutes; spring rains love life, unraveling the dense net of the three-sided hunt. Thus the spirit of the Xianchi pool naturally feels inadequate, and the virtue of the Fen River knows shame. The Crown Prince cultivates goodness in primal rectitude; the feudatory ministers change their tastes at the sophora-robed court. The scholars of the eight talents, the three seats, the nine thorns, and the four categories promote the king's affairs within, devising strategies to stride across the realm; the generals who govern individual cities and receive command of chariots guard the borders without, bringing script and axle into uniformity. The myriad regions are joined together; chieftains with pierced chests and tattooed breasts, and commanders with short bodies and long arms, from the south where stones melt to the far north at the heavenly sands, from the sun's branch in the east to past the moon's measure in the west—none do not scale peaks and hang over chasms, crossing mountains by rope bridges, or sail seas and traverse the deep, floating on waves that cannot bear a feather. Presenting tribute from their directions, offering loyalty and petitioning for offices, they bring birds of one heart and beasts of joined shoulders. Thereupon auspicious signs compete to appear, and precious wonders all assemble; divine mushrooms and sweet dew gather monthly in the suburban parks; righteous phoenixes and benevolent tigers are reported daily from commanderies and kingdoms. Like pearls and jade, they illuminate the central domain; like clouds yet not clouds, they linger over the palace battlements. Thereupon he drives the black-haired people toward benevolence and longevity, and saves moving and plant life in deep ravines. The year is joyful and the people abundant, with every family provided and every household sufficient; the white-haired carry no loads, and children sing songs. Following goodness like flowing water, they bend with the wind like grass. Promoting agriculture to attend to fundamentals, weapons are melted down and blades beaten into tools; red grain fills the storehouses, and copper coins rot on their strings. Above he illuminates Heaven, and below he reaches the subterranean springs. Heaven is now completed, and Earth is now leveled. The Son of Heaven then views all with the love for an only child, pitying the four forms of birth; he indicates the causes of correct conduct and marks the path to transcendence. Extensively setting up bodhimaṇḍas, he vastly propagates the wondrous Dharma. The precious oar of nirvāṇa gathers in the deluded crowds from the counter-current; the light of loving-kindness and compassion illuminates the masses of the lost before the dawn. The wheel of the Dharma turns throughout the trichiliocosm, and refreshing coolness covers the small leaves. Therefore, heavenly beings and dancing phoenixes leave the radiant park to praise goodness; bodhisattvas on flying elephants cross the fragrant lands to arrive in solemnity. Five hundred jeweled canopies soar with light and merge of themselves; ten thousand necklaces suspend in the void and descend. The niches and shrines are adorned, and the realm is extraordinary. He constructed a hall for the three seasons and erected a terrace of four pillars. Though the Han emperor had the palace for awaiting spirits and Xuanyuan had the tower for waiting upon immortals, how could they even slightly resemble the precious clouds or emulate the Form of the Equal Enlightenment? Thereupon, recalling the initial attainment of the Way, he erected the Bodhi tree. The four seas presented treasures, and the hundred artisans offered their craft. Carving gold and engraving jade, stringing mirrors and suspending pearls, its build resembles the Snow Mountains, and its form is like a flying canopy. Spreading in four directions it casts shade, and covering things on five sides; its fame is higher than the full moon, its grace exceeds universal shelter. Side by side with the splendor of the tree of a thousand lights, connected with the blossoms of five-colored flowers; the jade-disc sun hangs its radiance, and jade belts give rise to mist. A gentle breeze slowly stirs, and precious branches produce music. In solemn dignity the wondrous form rests under these curving boughs, prominent like a golden mountain, revered like the assembled moons. At the beginning, the faithful woman offered the hundred flavors; the devas presented the four bowls. Auspicious grass was scattered broadly, and green sparrows flitted in succession. He subdued the māras who spew lightning and repelled the demons who carry mountains. Its rare appearance and magnificent quality cannot be fully spoken of. This is truly a wondrous cause for generating goodness and a profound blessing for advancing conduct. The magnificent splendor of the present day was unheard of in past ages; it shall shine with unending virtue, suspended alongside the sun and moon. Lofty and towering with eternal bliss for myriad myriad years, I dare to compose this eulogy:
