Now, we have heard that the lofty Songshan alone stands as a mountain to form a screen for the royal house; the scions of the imperial clan serve as a bulwark to firmly establish the rock. Therefore, their affinity is equal to Lu and Wei, and their responsibilities comparable to Xiao and Cao. The Three Terraces occupy the proper seats, sitting to discuss the Dao; the Nine Spines are devoted to the king, reverently occupying collective affairs. You should all direct your minds, on behalf of the Princes of Linchuan, Ancheng, Jian’an, Poyang, Shixing, Yuzhang, as well as Nankang, Luling, Xiangdong, and Wuling, their families, relatives of the state, and the dignitaries of the Six Ministries, to take refuge and pay reverent homage to the relics, bodily forms, the wondrous Bodhi Stūpa, the springing emergence of Prabhūtaratna, and the distributed relics of Śākyamuni. We pray that their profound sentiments may settle like a mirror, and their vast blessings tower like mountains; elevating the imperial altars and causing the royal branches to flourish forever. Let the assembly with single mind take refuge in the triratna. In the three realms paths are diverse, and in the five destinies the trails diverge; devas and humans plant karmas, each returning to a single fruit; ghosts and spirits are drawn by retribution, their affairs manifest along dark pathways. Since the flowers and fruits of the ten wholesome deeds fall short of the true power, the vexations of the five turbidities increasingly bring burdens of distress. Although they may be intelligent, upright, and straight, and the sacrifices of the three beasts have not been diminished; yet yin and yang are unpredictable, and the defilements of the six sense faculties still adhere. All of you should each bare your sincerity, on behalf of the eight classes of devas and nāgas, the good kings protecting the stūpa, down to the asuras with eight arms and Maheśvara with three eyes, all to pay reverent homage to the venerable scriptures and correct canons: the pure prajñā, the ultimate nirvāṇa, the text on uniting the one in the Lotus Flower, and the discourse on non-duality of Vimalakīrti. We pray that all good deities may forever sever nescience and long comply with the true foundation, lying in jewelled palaces and sitting to enjoy the Fragrant Accumulation. Śakra, vast and deep, sails the boat of prajñā; the Śuddhāvāsa, profound and still, mounts the excellence of the ox cart. May moisture reach the three realms, and illumination shine upon the four continents. Great compassion pulls beings out of suffering, as recorded clearly in past sutras; vast kindness grants bliss, its meaning towering in famous teachings. Thus, divine provisional means lower their traces, appearing and disappearing differently; bodhisattvas cherish their stages, manifold in the ways they manifest or conceal. Boundless severe afflictions fan the eight sufferings along the long road; bound by entangling passions, beings circle the six realms on perilous ways. Even with golden chains and jade beds, they still contemplate liberation; carved pearls and decorated silks cannot equal the wayside path. As for the drifting scorch of hot winds, the surge of icy water, dark chambers a thousandfold, black cities a hundred fathoms tall; iron wheels crushing bones, copper pillars charring intestines; knife peaks branching out, sword edges thrusting across: such manifold sufferings are especially perilous and frail. If one breath is not retrieved, then one is parted forever for myriad kalpas; if for a kṣaṇa it is momentarily severed, then one is separated for a thousand generations. Together we reside in Jambudvīpa, born like bubbles in a place of phantoms; our frail and fragile bodies are more precarious than mayflies. The racing of wind and lightning is truly hard to arrest; how much more so when the three marks crowd together, and the two mice gnaw in peril; poison arrows and evil serpents are exceedingly frightful! We hope to rely on the true Dharma to uproot these accumulating defilements, perpetually enjoy a hundred blessings, and forever sever the six sense objects. In facing this unavoidable plight, only the Buddha can be relied upon. Now, on behalf of the six realms, four forms of birth, three destinies, and eight difficulties, with earnest and thorough compassion, with a single mind we universally pay homage to the bodhisattvas of the ten abodes, the śrāvakas of the three conducts; pay homage to Avalokiteśvara the Savior of the World, Ratnacchatra who presented the canopy, Mahāsthāmaprāpta of the Western realm, Gadgadasvara of the Eastern land, Vimalakīrti of the four eloquence skills, Śikhin of the two lands, Ratnacūḍa, Supratiṣṭhita, Maitreya, Mañjuśrī, Vajragarbha, Vimukticandra, Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin, Nityodyukta, the ten great disciples, and the five hundred arhats. We pray that prisons may become empty and illnesses and afflictions cease. Within the domain of a hundred counties, and beyond the borders of a thousand cities, wherever there are those secretly imprisoned, let them equally be set free. Let people embrace the virtue of covering the snake, and customs transform to rescuing ants; like those who drank poison without dying, or those drawn by swords without injury. May living beings not need thread yet naturally become warm upon death; may those at Wei Bridge be daily sated, and none starve beneath the mulberry bush. Block the three destinies, crush and fill the hells; destroy the demon hosts, and rout the army of birth-and-death. May King Yama generate the mind of the ten wholesome deeds, and Niubang initiate the practice of the five precepts. Like fish lacking water, or birds in a depleted forest, once hearing the Dharma sound, let them abandon their defiled bodies. May all humans direct their five limbs to take refuge in the Three Honoured Ones.
