17.44

虢州表言。州雖不奉舍利。亦請眾僧行道。有一異鳥來集梁上。意似聽經不驚不動。一夜一日乃下止於讀經之床。人人讚歎摩𭢃。又擎之以行道。法師於佛前為之受戒。良久乃去。

A memorial from Guo Prefecture stated: 'Although the prefecture has not received relics, we also requested the assembled monks to practice the Way. An extraordinary bird came and alighted upon a beam. As if listening to the sūtras, it was neither frightened nor moved. After a night and a day, it came down and rested upon the seat used for chanting the sūtras. Everyone praised it and stroked it. They also held it up while walking in the practice of the Way. The Dharma master conferred the precepts upon it before the Buddha. Only after a long while did it depart.'
